Halibut fish tacos are a cut above regular fish tacos. Why, you ask? Because halibut has a steak-like quality and a lovely, mildly sweet flavor that sets it apart. Not to mention, this halibut fish taco recipe incorporates a delicious mango-avocado dressing that perfectly complements the fish. Add some Bibb lettuce and chili sauce to the mix, and this is an incredibly flavorful meal (that’s also easy and quick to prepare). Serve these tacos with a side of black beans and rice, or serve them on their own. Either way, you’ll have some mighty happy people at the dinner table.

Ingredients for Halibut Fish Tacos

  • Fruit and veggies: A mélange of mango, avocado, red onion and jalapeno makes up the dressing. Be sure to wear disposable gloves when cutting hot peppers, as the oil can burn your skin. Also avoid touching your face.
  • Seasonings: Honey adds a dash of sweetness, and fresh lemon juice adds a welcome acidity. The minced cilantro tastes bright and fresh, pairing well with the bold flavors of these tacos.
  • Halibut steaks: When grilled, halibut becomes tender and flaky and extra tasty.
  • Flour tortillas: Flour tortillas are best, since they hold up better under the filling and toppings.
  • Toppings: We like adding Bibb lettuce and sweet Thai chili sauce to halibut fish tacos, but feel free to use pico de gallo, chopped fresh tomato or another topping, if you’d prefer.

Directions

Step 1: Make the sauce

In a small bowl, combine the mango, avocado, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, 2 teaspoons of oil, lemon juice and honey, then set the bowl aside.

Step 2: Marinate and grill the halibut

Brush the halibut with the remaining oil, then sprinkle it with salt and pepper. Grill the fish on a greased rack, covered, over high heat. Alternatively, you could broil it 3 to 4 inches from the heat until the fish flakes easily with a fork, three to five minutes on each side.

Step 3: Prepare to serve

Place the lettuce leaves on the tortillas. Top them with the fish and mango mixture, and drizzle with chili sauce.

  • Add other veggies: Thinly sliced radishes and green onion are a yummy topping for halibut fish tacos.

How to Store Halibut Fish Tacos

If stored properly in airtight containers in the fridge, the halibut and marinade will last for three to four days. Just don’t mix the two, as the fish will get soggy.

You could make the marinade ahead of time and store it in the fridge.

Can you use a different type of fish to make halibut fish tacos?

Yes. Other white fish (that’s preferably fresh and grilled) would also be delicious in these tacos. Try cod or tilapia for the best substitutes.

Yes, you could easily double the recipe for the mango-avocado marinade; we just wouldn’t recommend grilling the fish until you’re ready to eat.

  • 2 tablespoons chopped seeded jalapeno pepper
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh cilantro
  • 3 teaspoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 pound halibut steaks (3/4 inch thick)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 4 Bibb lettuce leaves
  • 4 flour tortillas (6 inches), warmed
  • 4 teaspoons sweet Thai chili sauce

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the mango, avocado, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, 2 teaspoons oil, lemon juice and honey; set aside. Brush halibut with remaining oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  2. Grill halibut on a greased rack, covered, over high heat or broil 3-4 in. from the heat until fish flakes easily with a fork, 3-5 minutes on each side.
  3. Place lettuce leaves on tortillas; top with fish and mango mixture. Drizzle with chili sauce.
