We’re strong believers that the best parties include appetizers, and the best appetizers should cause exactly zero stress for the host. That’s why we often serve easy and delicious dip recipes that require only a few ingredients to swiftly whip up. One of our favorites? This easy clam dip recipe, which calls for no cooking, just four ingredients (not counting salt and pepper) and a single whir in the blender to come together.

The first clam recipe appeared in an advertisement during a 1950s television show. Canned clams reportedly sold out in New York City within 24 hours! While this dip might not be as popular as other dip recipes for a crowd (we’re looking at you, guacamole!), it’s a great party dip that deserves a comeback.

Like many classic cream cheese dip recipes, this is no doubt one of the easiest appetizer recipes. We think you’ll especially appreciate how incredibly rich and decadent it tastes, deserving of all the fancy crackers—and maybe even some bubbles!

Ingredients for Clam Dip

  • Canned clams: Since canned clams come cooked and cleaned, they make this recipe a snap. You may substitute fresh clams, if desired, but you’ll need to steam and cool them first.
  • Cream cheese: The ultra-smooth texture and tangy, mild flavor of cream cheese is ideal for dips. Use the block of cream cheese rather than the kind sold in round tubs. The ones in tubs are too thin in consistency.
  • Lemon juice: Lemon juice brightens the rich cheese and briny, savory clams in this dip. Fresh lemon has the zippiest, clearest flavor, but bottled lemon juice will work, too.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Worcestershire sauce adds a ton of umami to the dip. If you don’t like Worcestershire, try replacing it with soy sauce.

Directions

Step 1: Place ingredients in a blender

In a blender or food processor, combine the cream cheese, chopped clams, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper.

Step 2: Process until smooth

Cover and process until smooth and creamy. Serve the dip with crackers, sliced raw vegetables, chips or breadsticks.

Recipe Variations

  • Add spices: This recipe makes a very simple clam dip, which is easy to enhance with your favorite spices. Love Old Bay seasoning? Add a generous shake. Like heat? Add cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce. Garlic salt or pepper is another great option.
  • Add fresh flavors: Brighten up the rich dip with a fresh garnish like chopped parsley, dill, green onions or chives. Or go bold with shallots or pickled onions.

How to Store Clam Dip

Store leftover clam dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it will keep for up to two days. Add a squeeze of lemon juice to brighten up the flavors if you like.

How to Freeze Clam Dip

You can freeze clam dip, although the texture of the dairy may be a bit thicker or grainer once thawed (it will still be safe to eat). Transfer the dip to an airtight container, and store in the freezer for up to two months. Let thaw in the refrigerator overnight. To smooth out the texture, whisk in an additional spoonful of cream cheese, plain yogurt, cream or milk. Again, adding a squeeze of lemon juice will brighten up the flavor.

Can you serve clam dip warm?

Generally, we like clam dip chilled. If you like warm seafood dip, try this warm seafood cheese dip or hot crab dip.

How can I make my clam dip creamier?

Some clam dip recipes include mayonnaise or sour cream, both of which will smooth out the dip by adding a bit of rich moisture. They also add a delicious tangy flavor note to the dip.
