With our s'mores dip, you can enjoy campfire vibes and flavors year-round. No open flame required!

Nothing says peak summer like making s’mores around a campfire! There’s pure childlike bliss in the hunt for the perfect roasting stick, the quest to achieve that ideal shade of golden brown on marshmallow, the satisfaction of squishing the toasted confection between two graham crackers, and taking that first bite. It’s hard to replicate that experience at any other time of year—but this recipe for s’mores dip will get you close!

This dip is made of gooey melted chocolate and marshmallows, made right in your oven. It can be scooped right out of the baking dish with graham crackers, pretzels, fruit or whatever your inner child desires.

Ingredients for S’mores Dip

  • Chocolate chips: For classic flavor, semisweet Nestle Toll House chocolate chips are the way to go. However, if you want to make your s’mores dip fancy, you can try a more elegant chocolate chip brand, like those from Ghirardelli.
  • Marshmallows: Our recipe calls for miniature marshmallows, but it’s fine to substitute regular-size puffs if you can’t find the tiny ones. Select a brand from our Test Kitchen’s picks of the best marshmallows, or try homemade marshmallows for a lovely texture and true vanilla flavor that exceeds anything you can buy at the store.
  • Graham crackers (optional): Graham crackers are the obvious crunchy accompaniment to scoop up your s’mores dip. In a s’mores taste test, our Editors found that Nabisco Honey Maid crackers made the most delightful s’mores.

Directions

Step 1: Melt the chocolate chips

Bake until melted, four to five minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from oven.

Editor’s Tip: Give the baking dish a quick shake to make sure the chocolate chips are distributed evenly.

Step 2: Add the marshmallows

Top the melted chocolate with the mini marshmallows. Return the baking dish to the oven, and bake until the marshmallows are lightly browned, four to seven minutes.

Editor’s Tip: One thing to watch out for: Even if it’s tempting to try to get a crispy “campfire” topping on your s’mores dip, never put marshmallows under the broiler. I learned this the hard way after setting a pan of homemade marshmallows on fire in my cooking classroom, in front of some very amused high school students.

S’mores Dip Variations

  • Use a different chocolate: You can’t go wrong with chocolate and marshmallows! S’mores dip would be equally delicious with milk or dark chocolate chips in place of the semisweet chips, or with a swirl of Nutella mixed into the already-melted chocolate. You could also use chocolate bars or pieces with added nuts, fruit or flavorings, such as Reese’s peanut butter cups. If you decide to work with chocolate bars instead of chocolate chips, you might need to give the chocolate a few extra minutes to melt.
  • Add a drizzle: For an extra treat, drizzle salted caramel, peanut butter sauce, butter pecan sauce or strawberry dessert topping over the melted chocolate before adding the marshmallows.
  • Give it some crunch: For a crunchy element, add almonds, peanuts, cashews or shredded coconut. Even a little sprinkle of crunchy sea salt would be a simple but noticeable addition. For the best results, toast the toppings before adding them. Layer the crunchy items on top of the chocolate but beneath the marshmallows.

How to Store S’mores Dip

Store leftover s’mores dip in the refrigerator in a tightly covered oven-safe dish for up to two or three days. To reheat, remove from the fridge, and let sit for 30 minutes, then pop into a preheated 350° oven for five minutes.

We love making s'mores when we go camping or have a campfire in our backyard, and this easy dip allows us to enjoy this yummy treat any time of the year. I like to make this in a stoneware or cast iron dish to help it retain heat. Try substituting milk chocolate morsels for the semisweet or mini peanut butter cups or peanut butter morsels in place of the chocolate. —Patricia Prescott, Manchester, New Hampshire
