I always judge a Tex-Mex restaurant by its guacamole. And although it's simple to prepare, it can go wrong oh, so easily. I've spent many years perfecting mine, to the point where I think it's better than most restaurants. —Joan Hallford, North Richland Hills, Texas

Ingredients

  • 3 medium ripe avocados, peeled and cubed
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh cilantro
  • 2 medium tomatoes, seeded and chopped, optional
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise, optional

Directions

  1. Mash avocados with garlic and salt. Stir in remaining ingredients, adding tomatoes and mayonnaise if desired.

Test Kitchen Tips
  • Avocado is high in monounsaturated fat, a so-called "good fat" that can lower your blood cholesterol along with the risk of stroke and heart disease.
  • For extra fun and flavor, add one of these delicious toppings to your guac.
  • You can use lemon and lime juice interchangeably in this recipe to achieve a different flavor. To substitute orange, though, you’ll need to keep a little lemon or lime to spark up the flavor.
