There’s a whole world of things to do with homemade avocado salsa verde. Aside from serving it as a dip with tortilla chips, you can add it to tacos or nachos. It’s delicious as a burger topping or in a rice bowl. We’ve also eaten it on black bean chili and spooned over grilled seafood (yum). This salsa is easy to make, too, requiring you to simply add a handful of ingredients to your blender and process until smooth.

Ingredients for Avocado Salsa Verde

  • Tomatillos: Tomatillos add a nice tangy tartness to this salsa.
  • Onion: Red, white or yellow onion will do though we prefer the sharpness of red.
  • Avocado: If your avocado isn’t quite ripe, put it in a paper bag with a ripe banana, fold down the opening and leave it on your counter for a day (yes, this really works!)
  • Serrano pepper: You could also use a jalapeno pepper here (or omit entirely if you’re sensitive to spice).
  • Garlic: We like roasting the garlic before adding it in to give this salsa a deeper garlicky flavor.
  • Lime juice: In addition to adding zesty flavor, lime juice keeps the avocado from going brown.
  • Cilantro: If you don’t like cilantro, parsley is a good substitute.
  • Agave nectar: Agave nectar brings a nice sweetness to avocado salsa verde.
  • Salt and pepper: After blending your ingredients, add more salt and pepper to taste to brighten all the flavors.

  • 5 tomatillos, husked, halved
  • 1 small onion, quartered
  • 1 medium ripe avocado, peeled, pitted and quartered
  • 1 serrano pepper, halved, seeds removed
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/3 cup lime juice
  • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves
  • 2 teaspoons agave nectar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
