Yeti is best known for its rugged outdoor gear. Offering some of the best coolers, drinkware and camping supplies, it’s no surprise that so many folks turn to Yeti when the weather warms up. But the brand has more than just beach-ready essentials like the Yeti Tundra cooler. It also has cups, water bottles and other products you can use year-roundlike the Yeti Rambler coffee tumbler, which is one of the most popular travel mugs on the market. Its cult-favorite status stems from its stylish shades, impressive reputation and seemingly unparalleled temperature regulation.

Yeti coffee tumblers, like the Rambler, are double walled and vacuum insulated. This is a big win, according to Erin Doern, coffee expert and Head of Product Development at Free Rein Coffee. When choosing a coffee tumbler, look for one with a vacuum-insulated, double-wall exterior to maintain your coffees temperature longer,” she says. Because of the Rambler’s heavy-duty construction, it’s clear that it talks the talk when it comes to keeping beverages steamy. But does it walk the walk when compared to other best-loved coffee tumblers out there?

To determine whether this pricey pick is actually worth the splurge, our Product Testing Team tried the Yeti Rambler 20-ounce coffee tumbler alongside 20 other coffee tumblers. We evaluated factors like heat retention, leakproof capabilities and overall performance. After analyzing our results, here’s how Yeti stands up to the competition.

What Is the Yeti Rambler Coffee Tumbler?

Yeti offers dozens of different drinkware options for every type of beverage lover, from wine tumblers to water bottles. The Yeti Rambler is arguably their best seller. It touts itself as the quintessential coffee tumbler for on-the-go sipping. It’s such a hit that Yeti has come out with a number of add-ons and accessories for it, including a cocktail shaker lid, additional MagSlider magnetsfor the lid and a straw lid for cold drinks.

Available in 10 seasonal colors and eight core shades, the Yeti Rambler is a good-looking travel cup that’s worthy of the best organic coffees. Shoppers can even customize their tumbler with their own designs, monograms and text. They can also select one of the many pre-made designs available in the customization gallery for an additional fee. The Rambler comes in a wide strata of sizes, including modest 10-ounce, medium 20-ounce and oversized 30-ounce options.

Best of all, Yeti claims that its double-wall insulation works for more than just hot beverages. According to the website, even chilly drinks like iced coffee and water stay temperature regulated for several hours. Bring on the iced coffee concentrates! While Yeti doesn’t claim the Rambler drinkware to be leakproof, it does claim that it has “fallen off of trucks, down rocky hillsides and even been kicked by a horse and lived to tell the tale.” In short, these are some seriously durable tumblers.

The Yeti Rambler coffee tumbler is stylish, insulated and rugged enough for every outdoor adventure.

How We Testedthe Yeti Rambler Coffee Tumbler

Our search for the best coffee tumblers took our expert Product Testing Team into uncharted territory. We tested more than 20 tumblers from popular brands and more nichealbeit well-reviewedshops. Product Tester (and caffeine fiend) Sheri Kaz created rigid standards and subjected each travel coffee mug to the same 11 tests to see which performed the best overall. Sheri collected over 730 data points and spent an estimated 50 hours on the test. This includes the time it took to research, source, intake and test the products.

To thoroughly evaluate each option, Sheri conducted tests in the following categories:

  • Temperature Retention
  • Drinking Experience
  • Ergonomics/Handling
  • Leakproof Capabilities
  • Durability
  • Specs
  • Cleaning
  • Lead Detection

From there, we used this data to compare options and write this Yeti Rambler review.

Testing Team Evaluation

When it comes to drinking experience, the Yeti Rambler is one of our top picks. The tumbler is made of stainless steel with a double-walled, vacuum-insulated interior. The splash-resistant MagSlider lid is slim and comfortable for drinking. Our tester found the rounded edges don’t bump or poke your mouth during sips.

Toha24 Annamarie Higley Yeti Rambler Coffee Tumbler Ssedit 01

There is a sizable tab to help lift the clear plastic lid off the cup. It easily glides on and off without an issue, which is a plus in terms of user friendliness (yet a minus when it comes to securitymore on that in a minute). The sliding mechanism works better than expected. It’s always either open or closed without any chance of an accidental half-open mishap. While not leakproof (and it doesn’t tout itself to be), the lid stayed on surprisingly well when we shook the cup upside down.

That said, there are a few areas where the tumbler doesn’t meet our expectations. The biggest disappointment of the Rambler is its poor performance in the thermal retention tests. While it kept hot coffee fairly warm at around 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit after six hours, it measured in at 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit with no ice left after four hours during our cold water test. After six hours, it measured at 44.5 degrees Fahrenheitnot very impressive.

Despite touting itself as cupholder-friendly, the 20-ounce size is too large for small cupholders and doesn’t fit securely in Sheri’s large cupholder, either. Additionally, the smooth, wider profile doesn’t quite feel secure in hand and seems easy to drop. However, if you drop it, rest assured that it really only sustains minimal damage to the body. Trust uswe hurled the thing. That said, the top doesn’t screw on, so expect to lose your lid (and thus your latte) in case of a mishap.

Final Verdict

While it didn’t make the final cut in our list of the top eight coffee tumblers, the Yeti Rambler coffee tumbler still offers a solid sipping experience. It also by no means performed the worst out of the 21 options we tested. If you’re looking for a stylish tumbler to carry around your coveted Cometeer coffee and you’re not super concerned about drops, this pick will do the trick.

Thanks to its vast array of shades and sizes, it’s the quintessential cup if you want to look cool during your commute. It also boasts a five-year warranty, bolstering its slightly higher price point. It doesn’t retain the chill as well with iced or cold brew coffee as some of the other tumblers we tested. However, there’s no danger of it splashing everywhere as you walk around. Just don’t expect zero drips or dribbles if it bounces around in a backpack.

Tester Sheri sums it up well: “The Yeti was a bit of a disappointment compared to others, but ultimately, it works as a commuter tumbler.”

Pros

  • Nice color options
  • Pleasant drinking experience
  • Made by a trusted brand
  • Five-year warranty
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Leaky
  • Not cupholder compatible

The Ninja Single-Serve Coffee Maker offers both and boasts an onboard milk frother for fancy lattes.

You can’t beat the convenience of a single-serve coffee maker. Just pop in a pod, press a button, and instantly enjoy a cup of coffee before heading out for the day. It’s the easiest (and quickest) solution for working folks who need their morning caffeine fix. However, for those of us who enjoy a particular brand of coffee, even the vast array of K-Cups on the market can’t stand in for our coveted beans. That’s where the Ninja single-serve coffee makera brewer that uses both pods and groundscomes in handy.

“Having the option to use a K-Cup or pre-ground coffee saves money and lets people customize their cup more to their taste,” says Sydney Manning, former barista and Editorial Coordinator on the Product Testing Team. But that’s not all this fancy barista-style brewer comes capable of. That’s why our Product Testing Team voted the Ninja Single-Serve Pods & Grounds our number one pick in our search for the best single-serve coffee maker. Here’s why we can’t get enough of this super convenient morning sidekick.

What isthe Ninja Single-Serve Coffee Maker?

The Ninja Single-Serve Pods & Grounds machine works in two ways. First, it operates similarly to a Keurig by using K-Cups to create a quick and efficient cup of joe in seconds flat. Additionally, it operates on a ‘bring-your-own-grounds’ basis, using a few scoops of your favorite pre-ground coffee to create a single, custom cup.

Our team is a big fan of Ninjas ingenuity in general, and this coffee maker is another on the long list of Ninja products we love, saysAnnamarie Higley, head of the Product Testing Team. It has a frother, cord management and iced functionalityall for a fair price.

How We Testedthe Ninja Single-Serve Coffee Maker

In our quest to find thebest single-serve coffee maker, our Product Testing Team tried 14 machines in their Testing Lab. They performed roughly 10 tests on each brewer and brewed over 50 coffee drinks, collecting more than 450 data points for this analysis. Machines ranged from the feature-richBruvi brewerto the splurge-worthyNespresso Vertuo Plus. During our tests, we considered:

  • Setup and Assembly:Testers read the user manual, noting its clarity and helpfulness. They then set up and filled coffee makers and noted the ease of the process.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance:For this category, we examine each appliances construction and overall look, measure the length of the cord and determine the height of the cup compartment. Additionally, testers note whether the machine brews pods or grounds, the size of the water tank, the buttons, toggles, screens and specialty capabilities.
  • Performance:Testers brew at least three beverages in each single-cup coffee maker. They utilize as many settings as possible to get a feel for the breadth of the machines functionality. When available, they make a cappuccino, cold brew and regular cups of coffee in various sizes and with both grounds and pods. Testers make a strong and regular cup of coffee in various sizes for lower-level machines.
  • Special Capabilities:For those machines that offer an iced coffee setting, we measure the temperature of the iced coffee directly after output. Testers try each beverage and gauge its quality/strength and the success of its execution if its a specialty drink. Testers then evaluate any accessories, such as a milk frother, on-unit storage or a water cycle.
  • Cleaning:Testers clean each one-cup coffee maker. We rinse the water tank, clean out the grounds if applicable and wipe down any splash marks. Then, we assess the ease of the process, any required solutions and dishwasher compatibility.
  • Value:Testers evaluate each single-serve coffee makers score and then look at the cost. We note whether or not each is worth the price, which indicates its value. Any warranty information also falls into this category. Lastly, we noted who each pick is best for (e.g., home baristas, morning rushers, those who enjoy variety, etc.).

To ensure the most apples-to-apples comparisons possible, all of these coffee drinks were made with Eight OClock Coffeemedium roast grounds, medium roast K-Cupsandmedium roast whole beancoffee. All tea was made withTwinings of LondonEnglish breakfast tea K-Cups.

Ninja Single Serve Pods & Grounds temping iced coffee

The Ninja single-serve coffee maker has an onboard milk frother for fancy drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. Enjoy an array of different brew sizes, from a tiny six-ounce cup to a behemoth 24-ounce brew that dwarfs Starbucks’s Venti size. Additionally, an adjustable spout allows for around eight inches of clearance, making it a good pick for taller travel mugs.

The K-Cup setting in a 10-ounce cup offered a strong, consistent stream with little to no splash-back. The machine beeps when the brew is readya good reminder for those who are sidetracked in the morning rush. While it wasn’t watery, the K-Cup coffee didn’t taste very rich or bold. That’s pretty on par with what we expect from a pod. Overall, it offers a pretty smooth overall taste, which is exactly what we wanted.

We used pre-ground coffee with the reusable pod for the iced setting, again brewing a 10-ounce cup. This round, we noticed the status bar, which indicates how far along the machine is in the brewing process. The pull-time for this was longer, and the coffee looks darker and richer. This likely accounts for the fact that brewing over ice melts the ice and waters the cup down a bit. This also means the machine puts out less than 10 ounces of coffee, again to account for the higher concentration.

Lastly, we used the specialty drink setting, which brews a four-ounce cup. This is their version of espresso for specialty drinks. You can then froth your own milk with the frother for lattes and cappuccinos. We made this a cold drink so that we didn’t have to microwave the milk first. The frother did produce lots of air bubbles, but that could be due to technique. The coffee came out at 134F before we added the icesubstantially cooler than the regular coffee setting. Overall, we loved this feature. It’s like enjoying a cafe-style cup at home!

No need to run to the local coffee shop with this machine in the house! This one does it all: iced coffee, specialty coffee and frothed coffee from grounds or pods, remarksSheri Kaz, our Product Tester. And shes rightit truly is an all-in-one solution for budding home baristas.

Pros:

  • Multi-functional
  • Slim design
  • Frother included
  • Large water tank
  • Affordable price

Cons:

  • Frother isn’t as luxe as a coffee shop wand

Here's why our Product Testing Team loves this small-yet-mighty machine!

In our Product Testing Team’s quest to find the best single-serve coffee maker, they tested 14 different machines over the course of 30 hours. Winners with the highest scores range from luxe options that create flawless lattes to sizable picks that hold up to 75 ounces of water per refill. Among these high-end options, one pick stands apart from the restnot because it boasts milk frothers and other beverage bells and whistles. No, the Keurig K-Mini Plus has a different kind of advantage on its side: size.

Keurig coffee makers aren’t as comparable as you’d think. These single-serve coffee makers come in a huge assortment of different options. While pricier picks like the Keurig K-Elite let you choose your brew temperature and cup size, some folks just want a simple cup of coffee in the morning. The Keurig K-Mini Plus is the perfect compromise for those who want a quick coffee fix before work but don’t want to waste space and money on an all-in-one machine.

What isthe Keurig K-Mini Plus?

The Keurig K-Mini Plus is a more upgraded version of the original K-Mini. Rather than focusing on a large water tank and custom settings, it forgoes frills for straightforward performance and a smaller footprint. This little beast easily slips into smaller kitchens and office spaces at just under five inches across and just over 11 inches from front to back. This makes it the perfect pick for apartments, dorm rooms and desks.

That said, the Keurig K-Mini Plus isn’t without tricks up its sleeve. A slide-out compartment that sits just under the brew stream offers onboard K-cup storage. Additionally, a “strong” button injects each cup with a little extra jolt, giving it an edge over similarly sized competitors. It also includes several brew size options for those who choose to use an array of different mugs each day.

Testing Lab Results

Keurig K-Mini Plus performed surprisingly well for such a stripped-down machine. Our team notes that it includes an auto shutoff feature that initiates after 90 seconds, making it a safer pick for forgetful folks. While the removable tank only holds a single serving of water, that lends itself well to the machine’s slimmer build. The onboard K-Cup storage also eliminates the need to splurge on Keurig accessories like cup drawers, though the lower price point gives lots of wiggle room in the budget for any desired extras.

During the medium roast coffee test, the result wasn’t watery or weak. In fact, we found it rather smooth-tasting overall. The strong setting tastes pretty similar to classic brew and offers up water of the same temperature at around 164F. We believe that the secret lies in the brew time, which takes just a touch longer than the regular setting.

Additionally, the K-Mini Plus performed very well with tea. We brewed our breakfast tea just after we made a strong cup of coffee, and the result left no trace of coffee flavor behind. Win!

While we did notice more splashback than other Keurigs we tested (which means more cleanup), this is a small price to pay for a nearly $50 price hike to the next expensive model. It’s worth noting that it also runs a little louder and slower than the other Keurigs. Again, we found the low price point balances out its shortcomings.

Pros:

  • Space-saving
  • Available in seven colors
  • Strength control
  • Simple to use
  • Included pod storage

Cons:

  • Uses only K-Cups
  • Small water tank

What is the difference between the K-Mini and K-Mini Plus?

Here's why espresso fans will love this pick.

The post Nespresso Vertuo Review: A Splurge-Worthy Barista for Your Counter appeared first on Taste of Home.

As a bonafide coffee snob, I’ve always been a bit wary of single-serve coffee makers. Sure, the convenience is there. Simply pop in a pod, press a few buttons and voila, a cup of coffee in seconds flat. No wait, no hassle. The catch? Most machines like Keurigs use pods to produce coffee that’s closer to that of a drip machine rather than a specialty barista-style drink.

Admittedly, I’m a bit picky when it comes to my perfect cuppa. I appreciate a strong cup of coffee resembling an espresso or Americana rather than a basic watery brew. I’m talking rich, deep aromas, crema and complex flavors. I simply never found the right machine for the jobuntil I learned about the Nespresso Vertuo. Learnabout this magical cafe-at-home in this Nespresso Vertuo review. You may find that it completely changes your perspective on the age-old Nespresso vs. Keurig debate!

What isthe Nespresso Vertuo?

The Nespresso Vertuo is a single-cup coffee maker like Keurig or the Ninja Single-Serve Pods & Grounds. The stylish upscale look adds a nice touch to any kitchen counter, and it comes in a variety of complementary shades, including black, red, graphite metal, titan, and silver. Ridged, frosted plastic compartments on the sides contrast well with the heavy-duty cafe look. Unlike most other single-serve coffee makers, Vertuo also uses proprietary pods that offer a range of drink styles rather than just coffee.

Vertuo pods are available in a variety of espresso and flavored coffee options and use a special extraction system that pressurizes the coffee, creating a deeper flavor and a generous amount of crema. For coffee newbies, crema is the red-brown foam that sits at the top of your espresso drink. Its full of flavor and rich, inviting aromas that give each cup a caf-style feel. There’s also no need to fuss around with buttons or toggles. The machine automatically detects each pod and brews the size and strength accordingly.

Enhanced models, like the Nespresso Vertuo Plus, offer additional bells and whistles, such as an adjustable water tank and automatic opening. There is also a bevy of additional machines, including the Vertuo Next and the space-saving Vertuo Pop+. In this Nespresso Vertuo review, we explore the original machine.

Nespresso Vertuo

No need to fuss with buttons or baristas! The Nespresso Vertuo automatically detects pods and brews up real espresso, coffee and specialty drinks in seconds.

How We Testedthe Nespresso Vertuo

As part of our tests to determine the best single-serve coffee maker, we evaluated 14 machines, performing roughly 10 tests on each brewer. Testers brewed over 50 coffee drinks and collected more than 450 data points for this analysis. We used this research to inform this Nespresso Vertuo review. Considerations include:

  • Setup and Assembly:Testers read the user manual, noting its clarity and helpfulness. They then set up and filled the Nespresso’s water tank and noted the ease of the process.
  • Specs, Construction and Appearance:For this category, we examine the machine’s construction and overall look, measure the length of the cord and determine the height of the cup compartment. Notes on appearance also include buttons, toggles, settings, water tank size and any additional features.
  • Performance:Testers brew at least three beverages, using as many settings as possible to get a feel for the breadth of the machine’s functionality. For the Nespresso test, we make espresso, iced coffee, and regular cups of coffee.
  • Cleaning and Disassembly:Testers disassemble and clean the Nespresso machine. We then rinse the water tank and wipe down any splash marks.
  • Value: The final consideration is value, which determines the price vs. performance of the machine. Testers evaluate the Nespresso’s score and then look at the cost. We note whether or not each is worth the price, which indicates its value. Any warranty information also falls into this category.

In our Product Testing Team’s evaluation of this Nespresso machine, they note that this is the best splurge-worthy option for those who want to enjoy a cafe-style cup at home.

The Nespresso Vertuo has a generous 29-inch cord that reaches rather far and four height settings for the cup compartment. It fits myriad mug sizes and travel containers under six inches tall, and the adjustable spout offers minimal splatter. The Vertuo’s generous 56-ounce tank comes fixed to the machine and offers ample room, requiring fewer refills. This impressed our Testing Team, who found most water tanks on the single-serve coffee makers they tested too small.

The Nespresso Vertuo whips up everything from regular coffee to specialty drinks like lattes and espressos in just seconds. As a bonus, our Testing Team also found Nespresso machines much quieter than other options. That said, they do make a bit of mechanical noise while brewing.

According to our lab tests, the machine brews espresso Nespresso pods using approximately 40 milliliters of water. The dark results are fairly bitter and leave a strong after-taste, with a nice crema on topperfect for those who appreciate a strong jolt in the morning! Similarly, the double espressoswhich brew around 80 millilitersoffer a good crema, strong flavors and a touch of bitterness. The regular coffee pods offer a generous dollop of crema on the surface of the drink. The results are strong and creamy rather than watery, likening them to a complex caf-style drink rather than simple drip coffee.

Pros:

  • Automatically detects pod
  • Heavy-duty materials
  • Available in black, red, graphite metal, titan and silver
  • Provides a nice crema
  • Fast, one-touch brewing

Cons:

  • Must use Nespresso pods

Baskin Robbins Iced Coffee Ssedit

10. Baskin-Robbins

The Original Cappuccino Blast from Baskin-Robbins is a combination of Arabica coffee combined with vanilla ice cream and ice to form a rich and creamy blended iced beverage. In keeping with our parameters of ordering a vanilla iced coffee drink, I requested a vanilla swirl be added to this particular order. The chain also offers an option of whipped cream topping as well as a dusting of ground cinnamon to finish off the drink, but I skipped that extra flourish for the purposes of this taste test.

This drink came in at the bottom of our list for a few reasons. At $6.79 for a small, this was by far the most expensive beverage we tested. The drink was overly sweet and drank like a heavy dessert rather than a pleasant warm-weather beverage. There was very little coffee flavor, while simultaneously being way too aggressive on the vanilla.

Bottom Line: We would save this as a once in a while indulgent treat, rather than a go-to iced coffee order.

Best Overall Flavored Coffee Brand

Bones

Pros:

  • 30 delicious flavors
  • Smooth taste, not artificial
  • Beautiful packaging
  • Easy-open pull tab and resealable zipper
  • Whole bean or ground
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Flavors not recognizable upon blind taste test

With their claim of being “immortally delicious,” Bones Coffee Company has alotto live up to. We’re happy to report that we agree, earning them a spot as the overall best flavored coffee brand. I’ve been drinking Bones Coffee for years now, ever since they drew me in with their fun, edgy advertising and absolutely gorgeous bag art. However, what keeps me stocking them in my at-home coffee bar is their incredible selection of ever-changing and uncommon flavors and the quality of their beans.

Bones

Over 30 mouth-watering options like cookies and cream and cereal milk truly taste exactly as intended, as do the more traditional flavors like vanilla and Irish cream. There’s also frequent collaborations with other brands and franchises (including video games like Fallout and flicks like Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas) that introduce new, limited-time flavors almost monthly. We’re talking truly new flavors, toonot just their old options repackaged.

While testing, I especially loved the resealable packaging that keeps my beans and grounds fresh for weeks. The flavors aren’t always recognizable (for instance, the strawberry cheesecake flavor felt more strawberry than cheesecake), but they’re almost always delicious. Out of all the flavors I tried throughout the years, there’s only been one I wasn’t crazy about. However, my husband really enjoyed it, so I think that comes down to personal preference.

Even better, the coffees are never artificial-tasting or acidic, and there’s zero added sugar. Overall, if you’re a coffee lover looking for a great tasting brew that still feelslike coffee, Bones is your best bet.

JotEMILY WAY/TASTE OF HOME

Best Overall Coffee Concentrate

Jot

Pros:

  • Tastes the most like actual, brewed coffee
  • 14 servings per bottle
  • Travel-friendly bottle is easy to open/reseal; pour spot is drip-free
  • Diverse selection of flavors
  • Subscribers enjoy reusable stainless spoon with first order
  • Brew it hot and cold or in a milkshake, smoothie or frappe

Cons:

  • A little pricey at just under $2 per serving
  • No decaf option

Jot

Thanks to a good balance of flavor, value and intuitive packaging, Jot’s coffee concentrate takes our top spot as the overall best coffee concentrate. Founded in 2019 and based in Boulder, Colorado, Jot quickly rose to fame on TikTok. It draws in all kinds of caffeine fans with a proprietary extraction process that produces a bottle of concentrate that cooks up around 14 cups per bottle.

Out of all of the brands I tested, this one impressed the most with its coffee-like flavor. It didn’t taste artificial or bitter, instead offering a mellow, slightly acidic flavor. Six different flavorsincluding a limited-time option that tastes like Nutellaround out this coffee concentrate. While I’d love to see a decaf option like many of the other brands offer, a travel-friendly bottle and mammoth number of servings make up for that.

At $2 per serving, it won’t win any prizes for being wallet-friendly, but that’s still less pricey than the cost of enjoying a cup at a caf. I’ve mixed up multiple drinks with Jot, including a few in my HyperChiller. It’s so easy to add a tablespoon to a blender for a mocha smoothie, or even in a batch of cake batter for a richer flavor. I found each serving option equally delicious!

Trade Coffee Review: This Subscription Is the Little Treat I Look Forward to Every Morning https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/trade-coffee-review/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 18:21:42 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1975739 Mornings have been easier since I started getting quality, freshly roasted coffee beans shipped directly to my door. Read on for my honest Trade Coffee review.

Trade Coffee

As a “zillennial” (AKA a late 90s baby caught between the crosshairs of two generations), Im influenced by my fair share of TikTok trends. Ive caught myself making girl dinner a few too many times and adding viral products to my Amazon cart. But my all-time favorite craze? Little treat culture.

Yep, theres a whole generation on the internet who feels the need to reward themselves after the slightest inconvenience or discomfort. Long work meeting? Excuse me while I grab a cookie after. Went to a dentist appointment? Well, Im stopping for flowers on the way home. In short, these little treats are a way to make the mundane rituals of life a little more rewarding.

In my home, my latest little treat obsession is a quality cup of coffee every. single. day. No more waiting for special occasions to splurge on the good stuff.

As Taste of Homes Senior Shopping Editor, Ive had the privilege of testing and reviewing all sorts of gear and gadgets, from coffee gift baskets to my ride-or-die Burr grinder. But at the end of the day, the most crucial component is the coffee itselfand thats where a Trade subscription comes in.

What is Trade Coffee?

Coffee beans on a weighing machine on a wooden surface

Trade is an online coffee marketplace that matches coffee enthusiasts with fresh beans from across the country. You can buy bags one at a time or opt for a subscription. Its a great way to try independent brands with a single account. I enjoyed coffees from Michigan, Virginia, Kansas, Tennessee, Massachusetts and New York. I even spotted some local roasters from my neck of the woods in Wisconsinshout out to Anodyne!

Trade also makes it easy to identify your flavor preferences and choose the perfect grind for your brew method (or opt for whole bean, of course). They also sell coffee tools and gift boxes.

We Tried It

Trade Coffee Subscription

Get ready to explore the wide world of coffee! Enjoy fresh beans delivered straight to your door.

How We Tested It

To see if Trade is worth its salterr, grounds, I tested a subscription over the course of two months. I sampled six bags in total, delivered bi-weekly.

Introductory Quiz

Before you reach for your French press, you have to make a Trade account. This process sets up your initial flavor and brewing needs, so don’t breeze through it. (Of course, you can always amend your preferences later, if desired).

The quiz starts with a lot of the usual suspect questions: How do you take your coffee? What roasts do you typically buy? Do you want whole bean or ground coffee? You’ll then get into slightly nicher asks, like how adventurous you are with coffee flavors. The quiz closes with selections around bag size, shipment frequency and whether you’d like to pre-pay or pay as you go.

It’s definitely one of the lengthier coffee quizzes I’ve encountered, but the thorough process sets you up for success with your very first shipment. And, if for some reason you don’t love that first pick, Trade offers a “first match guarantee” that sends a second bag for free if you’re not happy.

Delivery and Freshness

A box coved in a red bag placed on brown matt

Soon after ordering, my Trade coffee arrived in my mailbox in a bright red bag. After opening, I did a double-take at the roast dateit was just a few days prior! As someone who typically buys grocery store beans or organic coffee from Amazon, I was impressed. Typically, I’m checking that the expiration date isn’t coming up soon! I was very happy to know that the beans hadn’t been roasted and stashed in a warehouse for weeks (or even months) before showing up at my door.

Now, while researching, I had read some reviews saying Trade coffee bags can be a little skimpy, so I measured each bag on my coffee scale. In my experience, each bag weighed in right around 11 ounces, which matches the 10.93-ounce standard bag size Trade advertises.

Brewing and Taste

Black coffee inside coffee maker on a table

I was matched with Sparrows High Five Blend for my first order. Followed by Red Rooster El Salvador Finca Hungria, PT’s Flatlander Signature Blend, Common Voice Heirloom, Broadsheet Line Street Blend and Joe Amsterdam. All six bags fit the “classic, smooth medium roasts” identified via the onboarding quiz.

To prep, I tried each bag using my go-to methods: Pour-over and French press. I also made a carafe in the Keurig K-Duo I’m testing for our best Keurigslineup.

Every bag of beans lived up to my expectations. The freshness really made a difference, and I appreciated that the selections were tailored to my taste. Of the six, PT’s and Joe’s were my favorite. While I did have to supplement with additional coffee between deliveries, I loved knowing that I could bump up my cadence whenever I wanted.

That said, the one downside to Trade (that I could find, at least) was that there wasn’t an obvious option to add decaf selections into your subscription. Maybe I missed it, but I couldn’t find a way to mix caff and decaf bags, which would have been helpful as my husband is trying to cut down on his caffeine intake.

Pros

  • Custom coffee experience
  • Incredibly fresh
  • 450+ coffees in their online store
  • Easy to re-order your favorites
  • Ability to choose desired cadence
  • Multiple bag size options
  • First match guarantee
  • Ability to pre-pay or pay as you go
  • Easy to pause or cancel

Cons

  • On the pricey side, especially for an 11-ounce bag

FAQ

How much is Trade Coffee per month?

It depends on the subscription, but most coffee bags cost between $15 and $20.

Does Trade Coffee offer free shipping?

Yesif you pre-pay for your coffee subscription. Otherwise, orders incur a nominal (about $2 per bag) shipping fee.

Is Trade Coffee freshly roasted?

In my experience, yes. Every bag I received on my Trade subscription came with a roast date within mere days of ordering. This is truly some of the freshest coffee you can order online.

Product Comparison

Ive tested many coffee subscription boxes, and Trade stands out as the best of the bunch. It gives you total control of your coffee selectionsand there are hundreds of brews to choose from! This differs from other services, like Atlas Coffee Club, where theres only one new blend each month. I also love that you can easily add (or remove) coffees from your queue, which sets it apart from a more curated service, like Bean Box.

Final Verdict

Packs of coffee with a notebook and a pen on a table

If you enjoy trying new coffee, a Trade subscription is the best way to experience beans tailored exactly to your tastes. In my testing, I was most impressed with the attention to detail, freshness and flavor. Trade makes it easy to upgrade your day. Plus, it makes a wonderful gift.

Where to Order a Trade Coffee Subscription

You can sign up for a subscription on the Trade website. Plans start at around $20 per bag. While pricey, yes, the quality and convenience make up for itand it’s still cheaper than a daily coffee shop run. Plus, remember, it’s OK to treat yourself.

Bruvi Review: I Can Brew My Morning Coffee From Bed https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/bruvi/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 14:10:52 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1910596 I'm a coffee addict, and this is the best coffee pod machine on the market. The smart app-compatible, touchscreen device brews seven drinks.

The post Bruvi Review: I Can Brew My Morning Coffee From Bed appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
As a coffee snob, I’m not the biggest fan of single-serve coffee makers. I usually prefer my French press. Typically, single-serve coffee makers excel in convenience and speed, but not taste. Bruvi claims to make a coffee house-grade cup of coffee, including espresso and cold brew. Its the first pod-based machine to make cold brew. And, its B-Pods are sustainable and better for the environment.

The Bruvi coffee maker is convenient because I can schedule all of my brews in advance from my phone. This aesthetically pleasing appliance brews up to seven different beverages.

What is the Bruvi Coffee Maker?

Toha24 Bruvi Coffee Maker Daria Smith 02 Ssedit

The Bruvi coffee maker is a single-serve brewer that makes seven drinks: coffee, espresso, Americano, cold brew, iced coffee, infused coffee and tea. Bruvi scans each distinct B-Pod and auto-adjusts brew parameters. It actually brews good coffee, and its the smartest coffee maker Ive ever encountered.

I’ve used my Bruvi every day for the past few months. For an appliance to top my Nespresso Vertuo Plus, which I previously used daily for six yearsthat’s a big deal.

Bruvi Pods

Bruvis main focusthey only partner with roasters who make their coffee sustainably and ethically to create their B-Pods. Each B-Pod contains 40% more coffee than the average K-Cup, and the Bruvi coffee maker saturates each pod with 20 streams of water for even extraction.

I sampled five different B-Pods in the variety pack: a Colombian light roast, an Ethiopian light roast, a medium-dark roast from Colombia and Honduras, a medium roast from Guatemala and Colombia and a medium roast espresso from Colombia and Honduras. Each coffee serves a distinct flavor reminiscent of its roast and origin. B-Pod coffee roasters on the site include Mulholland Roasters, Wonderland Coffee Spellbinder D. C. A., Equator Coffee, Lamill Coffee and Joyride for cold brew.

Its hard to compare the Bruvi coffee maker to fresh, ground beans in my French press, but its pretty close. The same goes for the Espresso B-Pods to a true Espresso machine.

Smart Machine

Using the Bruvi coffee machine is so simple with a large touchscreen control panel. After filling the removable water tank, Bruvi scans the inputted B-Pod, and the screen reflects pod options, differentiating between coffee and espresso. Select from four sizes ranging from 6 to 12 ounces. For a stronger brew, select the stronger option. For a coffee pod, make it hot, iced or cold brew, and for an espresso pod, brew a single, double or triple. Brew options average around three minutes, with the cold brew function taking five minutes. This is impressive, considering most cold brew coffee makers take an entire day to steep.

Once your coffee is finished, the machine chimes and sends a notification to your phone. In the app, it records which coffees you brewed, and you can schedule your brews in advance. Pre-load a B-Pod and mug, then select preferences and schedule coffee to brew from your phone. The night before, I set up my Bruvi coffee maker and scheduled it to wake me up in the morning with a hot brew. I don’t like to get out of bed, but if I smell the coffee, I’m up and at ’em.

Options & Features

I often use the hotter option to brew hot water for French press coffee or tea. The “hotter” brew setting also increases the beverage temperature from 155 degrees to 165 degrees. The “low acid” function uses colder water when brewing.

Sustainability is an area of concern with single-serve coffee machines, but B-Pods can simply be tossed when usedunlike Nespresso where the pods must be mailed back. Bruvi creates B-Pods with a food-safe bio-enzyme, so pods degrade in a few years, and no microplastics are left behind. Test results prove a B-Pod breaks down 63% in 577 days, whereas an untreated pod breaks down just 2%.

Bruvi nailed the aesthetics of this coffee maker with a large sleek touchscreen, a white exterior, light wood accents and a minimalistic design. The machine itself looks smart and futuristic. The Bruvi coffee maker weighs 13.2 pounds and measures 12.6 x 10.2 x 11.5 inches. With the lid open, the machine is 17.2 inches tall.

After a B-Pod is used, its stored in a six-pod capacity bin. Once the bin is full, dump it in the trash. Note, the Bruvi coffee maker tends to make slight backsplash. This is a higher concern with espresso cups when the coffee has a longer distance to travel. The Bruvi’s drip tray can be adjusted to a taller height to minimize splashing when brewing in a smaller vessel. Or, remove the drip tray for mason jars and travel cups. Anything taller than 6.75 inches won’t fit under the Bruvi spout.

My main issue with the Bruvi is that you must press down very hard on the lid when inserting a pod. The first time I used the Bruvi, I thought I had broken the appliance. However, the plastic of the B-Pod just needed a good crunch. I also wish the Bruvi had a built-in milk frother. As a workaround, I use an Amazon frother. To accompany my morning brew, I employ East Fork Pottery mugs and Daysie syrups.

Toha24 Bruvi Coffee Maker Daria Smith 05 Ssedit

Pros

  • Remote brewing with smart app capability
  • Four size options ranging from six to 12 ounces
  • Seven drink settings
  • Easy to use with a large touchscreen control panel
  • Makes better coffee than other single-serve coffee makers
  • Aesthetic design with white exterior and bamboo accents
  • Sustainable coffee pods

Cons

  • Only compatible with B-Pods
  • Lots of backsplash when brewing, which makes a mess on the counter
  • Lacks a milk frother
  • Must press the lid down hard when inserting pod

We Tried It

Bruvi Coffee Maker

Bruvi makes the best pod coffee machine that's a smart app-compatible, touchscreen device that brews seven drinks: coffee, espresso, Americano, cold brew, iced coffee, infused coffee and tea.

Why I Love It

The best thing about Bruviit makes seriously good coffee. It’s a full-bodied, palatable cup of joe. Each roast is packed with flavor and distinguishable from the others.

No, I don’t think a single-serve coffee maker will ever beat the taste of French press coffee with freshly ground beans. However, it is easier to brew coffee in the Bruvi, and a heck of a lot quicker when I’m in a pinch for time.

When guests come over, they’re always in awe of my Bruvi and all the options. For a coffee maker, it’s quite entertaining to use with the large touchscreen control panel and smartphone app capability.

The Bruvi is aesthetic and looks beautiful on my coffee bar with a white exterior and bamboo accents. I’m all for a bright, minimalistic appliance. Plus, it’sthe only single-serve coffee maker that can make so many different types of drinks. And, it’s sustainable and aesthetic!

But Dont Take My Word for It!

Toha24 Bruvi Coffee Maker Daria Smith 01 Ssedit

I’m not alone, reviewers are obsessed with their Bruvi coffee makers.

Five-star reviewer, Tyler S. is throwing out his Keurig and encourages you to bite the bullet with Bruvi. “I don’t know what I was expecting, but all of my expectations have been exceeded. I’ve been dedicated to the Keurig brand for a good number of years now solely due to convenience, but I’ve never been too impressed with the quality of the coffee. In my opinion, Bruvi is finally an alternative to Keurig that successfully does what Keurig can’t. Coffee strength is impeccable, taste is amazing [and] it never feels watered downI can even make strong iced lattes in the comfort of my own home! If you’re struggling to bite the bullet with Bruvi because you already have a Keurig, let this be your sign,” he writes.

Stephanie Q. says this is the best coffee maker she’s ever used. She seldom leaves reviews, but felt this one was needed. “I cannot say enough positive things about the Bruvi. We added this to our coffee bar about three weeks ago, and it has become my new favorite kitchen gadget. I was strongly against the pod system because I didnt care for how the water sat in the machine. We used to own a Keurig, and that would often make us have stomach troubles. I have not experienced that yet with the Bruvi. I can taste the difference between the pods and feel the temperature which is amazing.”

Where to Buy the Bruvi Coffee Marker

The Bruvi coffee maker bundle retails for $398 on Bruvi’s website and Amazon with the inclusion of a brewer and 20 B-Pods. This option serves the best bang for your buck. Or, purchase the brewer alone for $373 on Bruvi.

A pack of 20 pods ranges from $22-$30, so each pod costs $1.10-$1.50. Opt for auto-delivery every two, four, eight or 12 weeks and receive a 20% discount. I always end up restocking the variety pack for an array of options.

Final verdict, the Bruvi lives up to the hype. While others may have different opinions, the Bruvi is the only pod coffee maker I’d recommend.

Bruvi Coffee Maker

Bruvi uses an auto-optimized brewing system to brew up to 40% more sustainably sourced, 100% Arabica coffee than a typical pod.

When the weather drops and the leaves turn orange, spooky flick season is just around the corner. One of the most recognizable Halloween films of the last few decades is 1998’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, co-written by Tim Burton. Love this Disney movie? Be prepared to scream over a spooky release from one of the best coffee brands around: the Bones Coffee Company The Nightmare Before Christmas collector’s box.

What is Bones Coffee CompanyThe Nightmare Before Christmas coffee?

nightmare before christmas Coffee Box

The Bones Coffee CompanyThe Nightmare Before Christmas coffee box is a witch’s fondest dream. Each box features five different delectable blends named after the movie’s titular characters. Apart from being an eye-catching coffee gift, this box is the ideal way to try a handful of Bones’ characteristically fun flavors.

Each 4-ounce bag of 100% Arabica coffee is a medium blend, making them versatile additions to your coffee bar.

In terms of flavors, The Nightmare Before Christmas coffee collection offers up a wide variety. Any discerning coffee drinker is bound to discover a new favorite. The Pumpkin King brings a nutty dose of pumpkin, pecan and praline to the palate. Ruff Weather, a flavor based on Jack Skellington’s faithful pup Zero, channels sweet and decadent oatmeal cream pie.

Other offerings include Frog’s Breath featuring Sally (chocolate mole), Mudslide Boogie (a mudslide cocktail flavor highlighting the film’s antagonist Oogie Boogie) and Santa Jack (a cranberry crme brle concoction celebrating Jack’s love of Christmas). Since the blends are pre-ground, it’s easy to pop them into a Mr. Coffee 4-in-1 for a one-minute, flavorful latte.

Bones Coffee Company is no stranger to spooky collaborations. Its other flavor options boast names like Peaches and Scream, while film-inspired blends, like Army Of Dark Chocolate, salute the brand’s ties to horror flicks. Recently, Bones expanded to include K-Cups, plus ready-made lattes using two of their most popular flavors.

Why I Love It

As an avid The Nightmare Before Christmas fan, I was dying to get my hands on this cool collaboration. Right off the bat, I was impressed by the packaging. The box and coffee bags are a treasure trove of art with impeccable attention to detail any movie buff will love.

On the first chilly fall morning, I was eager to take a trip to Halloween Town. I brewed a pour-over cup of each flavor, using a ratio of two tablespoons of grounds to six ounces of water. Here are my thoughts on each flavor.

  • Santa Jack Cranberry Creme Brle: This blend was warm and toastylike sitting next to a fire. I didn’t pick up much of a cranberry note, but the sweet creme brle flavor shines.
  • Frog’s Breath Chocolate Mole: Maybe it was the color on the bag, but I’m convinced this blend is chocolate mint rather than mole. I got sweet and slightly spicy notes and an intoxicating aroma.
  • Ruff Weather Oatmeal Cream Pie: There’s a reason coffee goes so well with sweet treats. And this blend makes you think you’re eating a cookie or doughnut alongside the morning brew.
  • The Pumpkin King Pumpkin Pecan Praline: It’s official: This is my new favorite fall coffee. It’s nutty, it’s spicy, it’s smoothI will happily drink this from September all the way through Thanksgiving.
  • Mudslide Boogie: Kahlua fans, this one’s for you. While not quite as potent as the real deal, this blend really does have notes of the iconic cocktail.

But Don’t Take My Word for It!

If you love flavored coffee orThe Nightmare Before Christmas, this collection is an absolute must, and I’m not the only one who thinks so.

“The artwork on the box made it worthwhile,” writes Michael A. “However, the incredibly aromatic and robust coffee that was contained withinout of this world. I definitely wasn’t disappointed.”

Brenda A. writes in her five-star review, “I am aNightmare Before Christmasgeek! I love the packaging, the box and the coffee! It’s fabulous!”

While this is definitely a lighter-bodied coffee, I proclaim this drip option on the McDonald’s coffee menu to be a very dependable fast-food coffee. I always need cream and sugar with drip coffee, but I feel like I could drink this black just because it has such an even flavor.

Who will love it: People who prefer light-bodied flavors
Who should skip it: Anyone who’s used to dark roasts

Despite my morning person tendencies, I still struggle to wake up. As silly as it sounds, sometimes the only thing that gets me fired up to start the day is a delicious cup of coffee. It’s either a strong iced latte with hints of vanilla in the summer or a warm, toasty cup of Joe any other season.

But after rotating through multiple popular coffee brands to master my morning routine, I’ve found myself in a coffee rut and craving something more than what’s available in the store. That’s when I discovered the Bean Box coffee subscription.

Personalized and easy to set up, my Bean Box subscription has introduced me to a whole new world of coffee I never knew existed. Here’s why it’s the ultimate pick me up for coffee connoisseurs and beginners alike.

What is a Bean Box subscription?

Bean Box Subscription

Based in Seattle, Washington, Bean Box offers independently roasted specialty coffee. They’re most popular for their custom-curated coffee subscription boxes, but they also offer beans (or grounds) a la carte. Bean Box is basically like having access to a coffee sommelier. They work with the nation’s best independent roasters to bring top-notch beans straight to your cup exactly when and how you want them.

As for their coffee subscriptions? Every step is customized by the drinker. Simply choose between whole bean or ground coffee, your ideal flavor profile (espresso and decaf options are available), how much coffee you want each delivery and how often you want the beans delivered. If you decide you’re stocked up on coffee after a few weeks, you can pause or cancel at any time.

How We Tested It: Bean Box Review

Bean Box Subscription

Subscription Set-Up

Bean Box Subscription

My Bean Box review started with taking the online questionnaire (it’s literally just four questions). Because whole-bean coffee allows for a more robust tasting experience, I opted for whole beans over freshly ground coffee.

Next, it was time to select my ideal tasting experience: Curator’s choice, light and bright, medium and cozy, dark and toasty, espresso or decaf. To get the full Bean Box subscription experience, I opted for curator’s choice. There’s just something about having coffee sommeliers hand-pick my brew based on seasonality that sounds delightful. I’m quite happy I went this route (it’s also the brand’s most popular tasting experience).

At the time of testing, I was living with my sister and boyfriend, so I opted for the delivery of two bags every month to ensure there was enough coffee to go around each morning.

Month 1: Tasting and Brew Experience

Bean Box Subscription

My preferred brew method is pour-over coffee in my glass coffee maker. A light and balanced blend with notes of fig jam, chocolate and cherry surrounded me upon opening the first bag. The aroma was unlike anything I’d ever smelled inside a bag of coffee. I mean, my first impression blew me awayand that’s just from the smell test.

I appreciate that the bag tells you the “golden ratio” for the perfect brew (it’s two tablespoons of coffee per six ounces of water, in case you’re wondering). This certainly made me realize that I use way too much water in my typical pour-overs. With three coffee drinkers that morning, I ground six tablespoons of beans in my favorite coffee grinder (hi, Hamilton Beach coffee grinder).

OK, time for the fun part and the reason you’re here. How does Bean Box coffee actually taste? I’ll start with this: My coffee-tasting experience was rich, robust and full of surprises. I drink my coffee black on most days, and the Colombia del Campo blend I tested first had a subtle tartness mixed with soft notes of cherry chocolate, just like the bag mentioned.

The next day, I tested the Ethiopia Yabitu Koba Natural coffee. I didn’t know coffee could have notes of cotton candy until this Bean Box review, and it certainly tickled my tongue in the best way. Unlike the light and balanced Colombian blend, it had a medium and cozy taste to it. This was slightly surprising considering its tasting notes are lemon, raspberry and cotton candy. Still, it certainly did not disappoint.

Month 2: Tasting and Brew Experience

Between three coffee drinkers, we went through the first month’s worth of beans (two bags) in about three weeks. So when the second shipment showed up, our palettes were cleansed and ready for more specialty coffee.

Instead of two 12-ounce bags, our shipment came with four six-ounce bags: A light and balanced Colombian blend brewed and a medium and toasty blend called Cafe Carmelita. Yum!

I seriously looked forward to waking up in the morning thanks to this round of Bean Box coffee. With notes of caramel, chocolate and sugar cane between the two blends, I thoroughly enjoyed the rich yet balanced sweetness. Even if you don’t love black coffee, you’re going to want to skip the coffee creamer with Bean Box because the flavor is so robust.

Following the same brew method as before, this round of coffee lasted about two and a half weeks. If I had to re-do my subscription, I’d go for the two-week delivery option. Still, I was thoroughly impressed with the entire subscription experience. I’m not kidding when I say this was the best quality of coffee I have ever brewed in my home. Though I love my typical Trader Joe’s coffee beans, they definitely got pushed aside while we enlightened our tastebuds with a whole new land of coffee thanks to Bean Box.

Overall Impression

Aside from excellent, curated coffee, what really blew me away was the learning experience gained from my Bean Box subscription review. Not only does the bag include tasting notes, roast strength and a fun little description about the tasting experience, but it also notes where the beans are from and the exact date they were roasted. It’s these little details that set Bean Box apart from other coffee brands.

Pros

  • Personalized subscription
  • Independently roasted
  • Expert-curated coffee
  • Espresso and decaf options available
  • Coffee is roasted to order
  • Subscription holders can earn:
    • Free shipping
    • Exclusive pricing, deals and promotions
    • Free coffee (and 5% back in credits on every order!)
  • Ability to skip a week or edit your coffee subscription at any time

Cons

  • Bean Box offers specialty coffee so it’s a tad pricier than store-bought options
  • If you’re serving multiple coffee drinkers, you may run out of coffee if the delivery frequency is monthly. I recommend opting for every two weeks.

What Other Shoppers Had to Say

Bean Box reviewer, Stephanie, raves, “As always, Bean Box selects wonderful and interesting coffees for me to sample on a monthly basis. This one is rich and bold, just what you need in the morning or anytime you have your coffee. Also works well as espresso.”

“Awesome coffees!” shares Bean Box reviewer, Jeremy. “I just love the unique flavor of each batch. You can tell that great care goes into every bean roasted.”

Bean Box reviewer, Aaron, adds, “I love getting to explore and learn more about coffee as I work through different bags. This subscription has been so much fun.”

Product Comparison

These days, coffee subscriptions like Bean Box are quite popular, so how does this brand compare to the rest? Though every coffee subscription is a little different, the bottom line is pretty much the same: Curated coffee delivered to your doorstep whenever and however you want it.

Some popular coffee subscriptions, like Atlas Coffee Club, introduce coffee lovers to beans from around the world. Bean Box’s edge, however, is all about “small-batch, locally-roasted beans” from all over the country. Meaning, they work with independent roasters and in-house coffee sommeliers to introduce you to excellent cups of coffee every time. Bonus: Most of the roasters they partner with are the best of the best in the nation, so yes, they know a thing or two about award-winning cups of Joe.

Final Verdict

If you can’t tell by now, a Bean Box subscription is the secret to easy, caffeine-filled mornings. If you find yourself in a coffee rut, take it from my Bean Box review when I say it’s the best way to learn about and experiment with new flavors and brew methods. Discover a wide reach of coffee beyond what’s available at the grocery store.

Where to Buy a Bean Box Subscription

Sign up for your Bean Box subscription on the brand’s website and treat yourself to the vast world of coffee. A subscription starts at $20 for one curated 12-ounce coffee bag per week. From there, your subscription is totally personalized, from deciding between whole bean and ground coffee to the flavor profile and right down to how often you want your bags delivered. You’ll be your own barista in no time!

BEST DARK ROAST

Copper Cow Classic

Pros:

  • Incredibly smooth and balanced
  • Caramel, chocolate and nutty flavor notes (yum!)
  • 100% Vietnamese origin coffee
  • Universal grind suitable for a variety of brew methods

Cons:

  • One of the lighter dark roasts we tried; may not be suitable for bold coffee lovers
  • Not available in whole bean

While Copper Cow is well known for single-serve pour-over coffee, our team would argue that Copper Cow Classicbeans deserve just as much hype.

This Vietnamese coffee stands out from other dark roasts. Yes, it has that same depth of flavor and full-bodied richness, but it’s not overly heavy or acidic.

Josh Rink, a Taste of Home Test Kitchen pro and former barista, describes a cup of Copper Cow’s classic brew as “soft and mild with dark chocolate notes and plenty of oomph.” Other testers picked up notes of caramel and nutsall flavors that work so well together.

This wonderful combination makes Copper Cow a must-try best coffee pick. The smooth, harmonic flavors make it a brew you’ll come back for cup after cup.

Starbucks shaken espresso in a clear glass with metal straw

Iced Toasted Vanilla Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

It’s a mouthful to order, but, oh, is it worth it. Starbucks’ shaken espresso comes from the Italian shakerato, which is simply chilled espresso. The toasted vanilla syrup adds a caramelized flavor to this frothy, oat milk-infused espresso beverage, making it a far stretch from the classic Italian drink. But who are we to complain when it tastes this good? It’s a real treat at any time of day, in any season.

The post Cometeer Coffee Review: We Tried Coffee Capsules for the Easiest Morning Ever appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Some mornings, my laziness gets the best of my coffee routine. Often, its because my pour-over or espresso portafilter is still dirty in the sink from yesterday morning. And I dont have the time or energy to clean them until, well, Ive had a cup of coffee. See the problem?

Usually, I would just power through. (Or ask my fianc to walk down the block to a caf.) But then I learned about Cometeer coffee capsules. These pods are changing the instant coffee gamebut do they live up to the hype? Heres my honest review.

What is Cometeer coffee?

Cometeer coffee merges the quality of a barista-crafted cup with the simplicity of instant coffee. The brand’s capsules are filled with expertly brewed, super-strong coffee concentrate, then frozen. The cups stay frozen until you’re ready to indulge.

To use Cometeer coffee, you have several options. For a classic cup of hot coffee, remove the still-frozen cup from its packaging and add 6-8 ounces of hot water. Or, “brew” it through a single-serve coffee maker. And for a speedy latte, add a melted coffee capsule to your steamed milk of choice.

If iced coffee is more your style, Cometeer tastes equally good when a melted capsule mixes with cold water, milk or ice. Heck, you can even serve ’em over ice cream for an on-the-go affogato or mix with vodka for an espresso martini. The options are endless.

As an added bonus, cleanup is a breeze. There are no messy grounds to compost or tiny espresso baskets to wash. Simply rinse the aluminum capsule housing and toss it in the recycling bin. Talk about a win for you and the planet.

How We Tested It

Making Iced Coffee Up Close Of Capsule Cometeer Coffee Katie Bandurski

I had the chance to try four varieties of Cometeer coffee capsules:

They arrived neatly on my porch, packed in dry ice. Right off the bat, I loved that this coffee product does not take up additional counter space in my kitchen. As someone who owns several coffee makers and accessories, this is a major perk!

I popped the four boxes into my freezer until it was coffee time. (Which, in my eagerness to try, was just a few hours later.)

I took note of the included instructions card and decided on a simple hot coffee. I put the kettle on, filled it with filtered water from my LARQ pitcher and set it to boil. Then, I prepped my capsule by running it under warm water. After just a few seconds I could feel it start to loosen, so I ripped off the lid and tipped it right into my favorite mug. When the water came to a boil, I added about six ounces and gave the mixture a stir.

The coffee concentrate dissolved almost instantly. Plus, the cold capsule cooled the coffee to the perfect drinking temperature. The whole process, from start to finish, took less than five minutes. And most of that time was waiting for the water to boil!

On first sip, I was pleasantly surprised. This cup could have come from a coffee shop. It was rich, bodied and had a nuanced flavor I would never expect from near-instant coffee. My first thought was, “wow, this really does live up to the brand’s ‘having a barista in your freezer’ marketing claims.” I also love that you can add as little or as much water as you’d like to achieve your ideal brew strength.

For my next test, I had to wait until Wisconsin weather cooperated and sent a sunny, warm day my way. When the clouds finally lifted, I knew it was time to try an iced coffee.

To melt, I simply put my coffee capsule on the counter for an hour. You can also stash it in the fridge overnight or run it under warm water. Remember, though, that the housing is made of aluminum, so you can not defrost in the microwave.

After that, it’s as simple as pouring over ice and milk. I chose to also add a splash of my favorite vanilla coffee syrup. One quick stir later, I took a sip. And, once again, I was impressed. While the lattes I make with my espresso machine have a bolder flavor, this makeshift version was pretty similar. It’s the ideal afternoon pick-me-up when you’re running short on time. And the best part? No dishes to wash!

Pros

  • Quick and easy to prepare
  • Freshly brewed flavor
  • Versatile uses
  • Sustainable packaging
  • Portable
  • Ability to try new roasts and roasters
  • Don’t take up space on your counter, just in the freezer
  • Easy to customize to your preferred brew strength

Cons

  • On the pricey side

FAQ

Making Iced Coffee Final Cometeer Coffee Katie Bandurski

Is Cometeer coffee expensive?

Compared to a bag of grocery store grounds or a pack of instant coffee, yes, Cometeer capsules are on the pricey side. However, when you factor in the gourmet beans and expert roasting, similar to what you pay for in a coffee shop, the pods could actually save you money. See ya later, $6 latte!

Can you use Cometeer in Keurig?

Yes! Simply give the capsule a quick shake, then insert frozen into your Keurig coffee maker. Select the 8-ounce brew setting and enjoy! Keep in mind that you dont need a Keurig to brew Cometeer capsules though. You can use kettle-boiled water, steamed milk or ice just as well.

Final Verdict

Now, I’ll admit, while I appreciate a good cup of coffee, I do not have the palate of a Q Grader (aka a coffee sommelier). If you, too, appreciate a quality morning cup and convenience, I highly recommend Cometeer coffee. Is it the fanciest brew in the world? No. But is it tasty and easy to make? Yes.

Plus, it lets you try different types of coffee from roasters across the country. I also love the versatility. As someone who likes to switch between hot brews, lattes, iced coffee, cold brew and even mushroom coffee, Cometeer gives me the flexibility to satisfy any craving.

Where to Buy Cometeer Coffee

Cometeer Coffee Box Ecomm

You can buy Cometeer coffee capsules on the brands website. Opt between a one-time buy for around $90 or subscribe for around $70. (For the latter, choose to receive deliveries every week, two weeks or four weeks.) One order includes 32 capsules, customized to your preferred roast level or roaster. For an extra $17, you can also add on 8-packs of decaf, half-caff or a “barista’s choice.”

It’s official: lazy mornings will never be the same. And honestly? Reaching for a capsule may just become my new normal.

Real cold brew is something magical. It highlights the delicate flavor nuances found in the best coffee brands and offers a less bitter taste than drip brews. Because of the time it takes to make, cold brew coffee is pretty pricey. Luckily, the new Instant cold brewer makes it possible to enjoy cold brew in under 20 minutes right in your homeno extra cash or time required.

What is the Instant cold brewer?

Making cold brew coffee that’s as good as a coffee shop requires an assortment of special coffee products andeven worsea wait time of at least twelve hours. It’s much easier (and faster) to buy the best cold brews on a supermarket run. However, at upwards of $8 per bottle, it’s not a cost-effective solution.

The Instant cold brew coffee maker whips up smooth, flavorful cold brew without the wait. We’re not referring to iced coffee, eitherwe’re talking a real cup of made-to-order cold brew, without driving to your local cafe. Fill up your iced coffee cup right at home for the perfect Monday pick-me-up.

Each package comes with a glass carafe, inner basket insert, lid and a touchscreen base that does all the brewing work. The base boasts several touch controls, including a strength selector. Because the pitcher is relatively small at only 32 ounces, it fits on apartment counters or easily tucks away under a coffee bar.

How does the Instant cold brew coffee maker work?

Instant Cold Brew Coffee Maker

To make a simple cold brew or create the base for your favorite copycat recipe, fill the basket insert inside the cold coffee brewer with a few scoops of your favorite coffee grounds. We recommend investing in a clip scoop that keeps coffee fresh between uses. Any type of coffee will work in the Instant cold brewer, provided the beans are coarsely ground.

Then, add the desired amount of cold water to the pitcher, being careful not to go higher than the recommended fill line. Pop on the lid and place the carafe on the base. Now it’s time to brew! Starting the machine is intuitivejust select the desired brew strength using the plus and minus buttons. Simply tap the green triangle button to begin brewing.

Once 20 minutes pass, a pot of fresh cold brew is ready for consumption. We love the flexibility of the machine since it’s built to tailor brews to any taste. For example, those who prefer tea over coffee can substitute the coffee grounds for tea leaves for lightning-fast iced tea.

It’s even easier to clean than it is to use, too. When finished, just pop the carafe into the dishwasher after emptying the brew basket.

What Reviewers Say

Over 100 reviewers tout this coffee maker as an improvement over traditional brew methods that require heat or an extensive wait.

Verified reviewer LaStrawberryMom even owns two! She writes, “I have been a cold brew drinker for years. Unfortunately, the old way had me using a gadget that had to go in the fridge and sit for a century. Then, I had to strain the coffee grounds, etc. All messy and time-consuming. I saw this Instant Pot cold brew maker on social media and decided to give it a try. I was concerned due to the price tag, but I love my Instant Pots (I have two of those as well), so I felt it would be a quality product.

Simply add the grounds to the strainer basket and turn it on. I use cold water from the fridge. Sometimes I drink immediately, but sometimes I toss it in the fridge for even longer brewing beyond the max 30 minutes it will run.

Clean-up is VERY easy and its compact design doesn’t take up much room on the counter at all. I have even put it in my suitcase and traveled to Vegas with it! I love it so much that I have now bought a second one to keep at my vacation place.”

Where can I buy the cold brew coffee maker?

Instant Cold Brew Coffee Maker

The Instant cold brew machine normally retails for $119, but Amazon has it for only $99 for a limited time. Stock up at this special price and snag an Instant cold coffee maker as a gift for a coffee lover. Or grab one for yourself as a self-care investment and say goodbye to $5 down the drain every morning.

How to Use a Moka Pot to Make Espresso-Style Coffee https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-use-a-moka-pot/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 14:07:45 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1852362 The strongly-brewed coffee from a Moka pot has a similar taste and texture to espresso, making home lattes and post-dinner coffees better than ever.

The post How to Use a Moka Pot to Make Espresso-Style Coffee appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Picture it: You wake up, trudge to the kitchen, pull out your coffee mug and start grinding beans. You’re excited about your morning cup of coffee, but you’re also tired of the same old drip coffee every day. It’s also much too early for a coffee shop run, plus it would require getting dressed.

Here’s where learning how to use a Moka pot will revamp your morning. The small stovetop appliance looks like a fancy metal teapot, and it’s going to give you a stronger boost of caffeine than your trusty drip maker can brew. (Sorry, Mr. Coffee!) If you love to make lattes at home, the Moka pot is good for more than just regular joe. Because of the brewing method, coffee from a Moka pot is very strong and tends to have a creamier consistency similar to that of espresso.

How do you use a Moka pot?

Moka pots vary in size from 1-cup to 6-cup to 18-cup. This makes it easy to brew exactly what you need without wasting precious beans. For single servings, a 1-cup Moka pot will do the trick. If you’re serving a small crowd, a 6- to 9-cup Moka pot should be enough. Cups are measured in espresso cup size.

To get the most consistent results when brewing your morning coffee in a Moka pot, make sure your beans are ground correctly. You’ll want to aim for grounds that are coarser than what you would need for an espresso machine, but finer than what you scoop into a drip coffee maker.

Ingredients

  • Coffee grounds, enough to fill your pot’s filter
  • Water

Tools You’ll Need

  • Moka pot: This pot is the main event for this brew method. Choose the size that best suits your needsfor a starting point, the 1-cup Bialetti Moka Express makes about 2 ounces of coffee. That’s enough to fill one espresso cup.
  • Coffee grinder: For the best-tasting coffee, you’ll want fresh ground beans. The KitchenAid Blade Coffee Grinder is a great space-saving option, or you can opt for a manual grinder from our list of best coffee grinders.
  • Tea kettle:If you have an electric kettle like many other home baristas, it’s time to heat it up. If you’d rather not boil the water for your Moka pot directly on the stove, you can pour in boiling water from the kettle instead.

Directions

Step 1: Grind the beans

Grind your favorite coffee beans to a fine consistency. The grounds should be a little larger than table salt.

Step 2: Boil the water

Boil water in the bottom portion of the pot. Be sure only to add water to the fill line and no higher. The fill line is just under the pressure release valve (also called a safety valve). This valve needs to be clear in order to release steam as pressure builds.

Step 3: Add grounds to filter

Once the water is just boiling, turn off the heat. Put coffee grounds in the middle portion of the pot that looks similar to a funnel. Don’t tamp the grounds down, but do level the grounds off. Gently drop the filter into the bottom of the pot.

Editor’s Tip: While it might be easier to assemble the whole Moka pot (grounds in filter, cold water and top twisted on) and boil fully assembled, this will result in bitter coffee. Allowing the water to boil first and then adding the grounds, means the grounds haven’t spent time heating up. The heating time is what will make your coffee taste bitter (like having stronger tea the longer you steep the leaves).

Step 4: Add pot back to heat

Hold the bottom portion of the pot with a towel (no burnt hands in this kitchen!) and twist the top of the Moka pot on. Immediately move the pot to a burner set at medium heat, and wait until the coffee begins to pour up and out. Make sure the lid is propped open so you can see when the coffee starts to brew.

Step 5: Remove the pot from the burner

As soon as you hear a gurgling sound, shut the lid and remove the pot from the burner. You can place the pot on a trivet, or run the bottom of the pot under cold water to stop the brewing process.

Step 6: Serve

Pour coffee into an espresso cup if drinking black. Pour into a larger coffee mug if you like to add water for Americanos or frothed milk for lattes.

FAQs About How to Use a Moka Pot

Can you use regular coffee grounds in a Moka pot?

Learning how to use a Moka pot can seem like a lot at first. To cut out a step, you can use pre-ground beans. Just note that the flavor may not taste as fresh and the coffee may not be as strong. The strength of the coffee depends on the correct grind size. Pre-ground coffee is more coarse than what a Moka pot calls for, so the brew won’t be quite the same.

However, you can consult with a barista at your local coffee shop and they can ground the beans to your precise specifications.

Should you tamp coffee in a Moka pot?

No, and for good reason. If you love your espresso machine and the art of prepping your daily double-shot, you’ll have to remember that grounds in Moka pots should never be tamped down.

Espresso machines are made for high pressure, Moka pots are not. Though they are nicknamed “stovetop espresso machines,” Moka pots do not actually generate enough pressure to create a true shot of espresso. Tamping down the grounds could result in an exploding Moka pota fiasco no one needs at 7 a.m.

Moka pot vs. French press: Which is better?

While either brew method is a fantastic gift for coffee lovers (or for yourself!), there’s a definite difference between the two. Moka pots aren’t necessarily better than French presses, and vice versa.

Instead, it’s all about what you prefer in a cup of coffee. Do you like super strong coffee that is thick and rich like espresso? Then a Moka pot is the best option for you. Do you prefer a more full-bodied coffee that is still strong, but not quite as sharp? Then using a French press would be your best bet.
